Derek Apanovitch is the President and Chief Executive Officer of Global Safety Management. Derek also serves as a Board Member at GSM. Derek is an experienced strategic and operational executive in technology-enabled environments that have evolved rapidly and achieved significant size.
Derek was most recently President of Ultimate Medical Academy (UMA), an online healthcare training and continuing medical education organization committed to equipping and empowering students to excel in healthcare careers. UMA developed innovative educational technologies, workforce development strategies, and student support programs. The institution has achieved industry-leading student satisfaction scores and developed employer partnerships with prominent national and regional healthcare companies. Derek was the founding executive and first employee of the online education division at UMA that eventually was responsible for over 85% of the organization’s $300 MM revenue. He served as President from 2015 to 2019. The President is the senior executive for the organization and reports directly to the board.
Previously, Derek was the Vice President of Marketing at Health Benefits Direct Corporation (doing business today as InsPro Technologies Corporation), a direct marketer and distributor of a wide range of health and life insurance products to individuals, families and groups, where he worked from April 2007 to July 2008. Earlier, Derek was an Executive Director of Acquisition and Retention at Kaplan Higher Education, a diversified online educational services provider, where he worked from 2004 through 2007. Prior to Kaplan Higher Education, he was an Associate at Sullivan & Cromwell, an international law firm, where he was responsible for consultation on private and public equity and debt offerings, mergers and acquisitions, private equity investments, restructurings and corporate governance issues. Derek started his legal career as a judicial clerk for the United States Court of Appeals for the Eleventh Circuit.
Derek holds an MBA from the Kellogg School of Management at Northwestern University with concentrations in Health Industry Management and Accounting, a JD from the Duke University School of Law, and a BA from the University of Pennsylvania.
Alex Milan is a Senior Solutions Specialist for Global Safety Management (GSM). GSM is an environmental health and safety (EHS) software company dedicated to simplifying product safety documentation and compliance. Milan joined the team in October 2018 and acts as an important contributor to the company’s overall growth, profitability and brand awareness. Milan’s goal is to help drive rapid and sustainable revenue growth for GSM and its flagship software solution, TotalSDS.
As a Senior Solution Specialist, Milan excels at designing custom solutions that solve both industry problems and unique user needs. Milan’s agile thought and excellence in scoping projects ensures that customers receive thoughtful and functional solutions.
Milan earned her Bachelor of Science in Finance from Florida State University. During her time at FSU, she had a successful career playing for the Seminole Golf team, helping the Seminoles win four consecutive NCAA regional appearances. In 2014, Milan won the Golden Torch award for women’s golf, was named to the All-ACC team and was inducted into the Seminole Torchbearers. Milan went on to play professional golf on the LPGA Symetra Tour for three years after graduating from FSU. Milan continues to play around the Tampa Bay area during her free time and enjoys spending time with her rescue dog.
Rennee Karlik – Regulatory Compliance Specialist
Rennee Karlik is a Regulatory Compliance Specialist for Global Safety Management (GSM), an environmental health and safety software company dedicated to simplifying product safety documentation and compliance.
As a career chemist, Rennee has extensive experience with product formulation, manufacturing and regulatory management for diverse product lines and functionality. Her manufacturing background allows her to assess hazards, exposure and regulatory compliance for all stages within the life cycle of the product. Her work includes broad and industry specific regulatory research, Safety Data Sheet (SDS) authoring, consulting and support of the software development team from a regulatory standpoint.
A successful teacher and trainer of GHS hazard communication, regulatory compliance, hazard analysis and prevention, Karlik is wellpracticed in formulation, analysis, manufacturing, customer service, technical support and sales within the industry.
She is noted for her professionalism, knowledge and ability to navigate successfully in the complex regulatory World of hazard communication and chemical compliance. Rennee’s vast experience and industry knowledge frequently allows her to present critical insight in the development of compliance SDS authoring and management software and processes in a highly regulated work environment.
Rennee holds a Bachelor of Science in Chemistry with a Business Concentration from James Madison University and resides in Tulsa, Oklahoma.
Mary Jones – Manager of Implementation and Delivery
Mary Jones is the Manager of Implementation and Delivery at Global Safety Management. As the Manager of Implementation and Delivery, Jones merges the resources of the Authoring, Development and Sales teams to meet customer needs. Jones owns the implementation process of TotalSDS from beginning to end and plays a key role as the main contact point for most TotalSDS users. In addition, Jones manages the work flow and deliverables for much of the professional services work at GSM. Jones leverages her microbiology and biosafety background to provide customers the technical information they need and act as a liaison to those who need more explanation.
Jones has nearly 20 years of professional experience as a microbiologist and biosafety professional. While working in the contract research industry, she worked on a variety of microbiology and molecular biology projects for commercial, non-profit and defense customers. Jones designed experiments and worked closely with project principal investigators and technical staff to ensure all project objectives were met successfully. During this time Jones also cross-trained as a biosafety professional and developed, implemented, and managed a process to track CDC/USDA Select Agent pathogens utilizing a database tracking system across various locations. She also advised researchers and administrative staff on biosafety matters in accordance with applicable regulations and accepted industry standards, obtained and maintained all relevant regulatory permits and oversaw all dangerous good shipments, specializing in Division 6.2 hazardous materials. She also was involved in of a variety of successful regulatory audits from organizations including CDC, USDA and DOT.
In addition, Jones has experience working for a small biotech startup. With only four employees – and being the only full time employee – she managed the day to day operations of the lab and worked independently to perform experiments to develop commercial assays to detect methicillin-resistant staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) pathogens and C. difficile toxins. She also was the designated SDS keeper and fully understands the pain of keeping track of paper SDSs in binders. Through this work Jones also served as an Industry Expert as part of a National Institute of Health program designed to teach entrepreneurial skills to biotech startups. Jones also did a stint in an academic lab at the Geisel School of Medicine at Dartmouth developing methods related to the molecular cloning of MRSA.
Outside of GSM, Jones is a board member for the Guardian ad Litem Foundation of Tampa Bay, an organization that advocates for and meets the needs of children in foster care. Jones has a Bachelor of Science in Biology from Florida Southern College and a Master of Science in Biology from the University of Central Florida.
Johnny Andon – Global Regulatory Affairs Manager
Johnny Andon is the Global Regulatory Affairs Manager at Global Safety Management (GSM). In this capacity, he manages GSM’s team of expert Regulatory Compliance Specialists by providing technical expertise guidance in the areas of Chemical Hazard Communication including Safety Data Sheet (SDS) and Label authoring, product safety and transportation of Dangerous Goods requirements on an international scale.
Having long been allured by the crossroad between the science and legal fields, Johnny brings extensive experience in the chemical industry through his work with Health, Safety and Environment (HSE) in the Oil and Gas sector as well as broader chemical regulatory affairs roles with GSM where he applies his knowledge of complex legislation initiatives to help clients in a variety of industries meet the regulatory requirements of their target markets. Through his efforts, he has helped secure contracts from major companies in various industries that have been seeking compliance with ever-changing chemical regulations.
A creative problem-solver, Andon’s vast knowledge of the Globally Harmonized System of Classification and Labelling of Chemicals (GHS) has been instrumental in leading the requirements to develop TotalSDS, GSM’s industry-changing software that aims to deliver a comprehensive SDS Authoring and Management solution to simplify global chemical regulatory compliance.
Johnny holds a Bachelor of Science in Biotechnology with a Bioinformatics concentration along with a Bachelor of Arts in Spanish from the University of Houston. A native Texan who enjoys traveling the world and going on adventures, Johnny has visited more than 20 countries and is not done yet. He currently resides in Gothenburg, Sweden.
